With a major snow storm predicted for this weekend, we thought it might be a good idea to let you know how we approach snow storms on sundays at Terra Nova. The reality is that we live in the northeast and we are well equipped to handle snow both at the government level (snow plowing etc.) and on the personal level (shoveling and what not). This means that only the worst storms at the worst times really have any effect on us as a church. If it snows saturday night, it will probably be cleared away by sunday morning. If it’s snowing lightly on sunday morning, it’s pretty, but it’s not a hassle any more than heavy rain.Another reality is that we are a very regional church. People drive to Terra Nova from as far as 30-45 minutes away. That means that just because it looks really bad where you are–it might be fine elsewhere. We have never cancelled church at Terra because of snow, but if we did, here’s how things would go:: In the event of a really bad storm that is still going on sunday morning, and is predicted to go on throughout the morning, I will watch the news and see what kind of warnings are being issued. If the weather man says “It’s bad out there, you might want to stay home”, I’ll see for myself by driving to Troy. Weathermen are drama queens and generally sissies when it comes to warning people. Normally, the roads are fine. But if the police are requiring that people stay home in the areas immediately around Troy, then we would cancel church. In other words, our primary concern is “what are the conditions in the Troy area” because we know that things could be fine in Troy and terrible where you live. If things are fine in Troy–church is on. If Troy is shut down completely, then we would probably need to cancel. So, how would you know if we cancelled? Right here on the blog. If you are ever wondering if we are canceling or not–don’t call the church, go to the blog. But in general, assume that we won’t cancel church except for the most drastic of circumstances.Hope this helps.
