Elizabeth Corey attended Terra Nova for more than a year before heading out to California recently to work with people on the margins of society. Her parents Tom and Anne, as well as her sister Susannah are all very involved at Terra. Please keep Elizabeth (aka::zibs) in your prayers.Things for me have been going really well. I finally have an apartment and this week was actually the first time I stayed there. It’s a 1bedroom that I’m sharing with Esther, who I went to college with. It’s actually a pretty nice place, if you can get over the bugs. The area Ilive in is called Westlake/MacArthur Park, and it’s about 5 blocks west of downtown. Pretty much an immigrant community through and through; I definitely stand out as one of the few white people around.I have been keeping pretty busy between Innerchange and my other two jobs. I teach 5 hours a week for a reading intervention program at a middle school. It’s within walking distance which is nice, and I only have 6 students so it’s manageable. The program is for students who are below grade level in their reading and comprehension (which almost all of these students are) andI’ll be teaching this class through March. I also work 15-20 hours a week at CLUE (www.cluela.org), which stands for Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice. It’s an interfaith non-profit that unites religious leaders to give a moral voice to economic justice issues. The past three weeks, I was working on their healthcare campaign, and I helped organize a 48-hour vigil outside the Governator’s office where we were asking for affordable accessible health care for all people. This week I started working on the New Sanctuary Movement, where illegal immigrants are housed by churches while lawyers try to work out ways to keep them with their families. I am the main advocate for the three people in sanctuary in the downtown LA area, so I work on getting people to write letters of support for them, make sure they are getting the support they need, communicate with the lawyer, etc. If you are a Sojourners reader, the cover story for Sept/Oct is about this, and was written by my boss.As far as Innerchange stuff goes, I tutor two nights a week for neighborhood kids (two different areas). We also get together to prayand discuss things frequently. We are currently thinking about starting some type of home group for the young adults in the area because there aren’t many churches nearby that are meeting this need. Also, if you want things to pray for: many of the kids in the neighborhood are unsupervised for long periods of time and have little motivation to do well in school. Pray that they would not fall through the cracks or get into gangs (there are two nearby). Also pray that we would know who to reach out to to come to a small group.peace, zibs
