Eternal, Internal, External // August 28, 2006

If there is one thing I have done more often than any other in discussing ministry with anyone it is drawing 3 circles. I draw them in color too. One is red, one blue, one green. They are arranged in a Venn Diagram. The image represent three overlapping areas. They are all necessary parts of the whole. Connect the overlapping lines and there is a unique symbol that is formed. It is the Triquetra. It was a symbol of Irish paganism and later of Irish Christianity. It was used most to symbolize the mystery of the Trinity- this One and Three Being who lives as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. I would love to tell you about them here, but I know that blogs don’t hold people’s attention.

For me, I most often see three realms of existence. They are true for all humanity. They come directly to us from Genesis. It is part of the very nature of they way we are formed. They are as real a part of us as the double helix ribbons of DNA that make us. We exist in the connection with the Eternal, the Internal and the External.

The Blue Zone is represents the Eternal. It is the place and space beyond us. Imagine Adam and Eve in their world of new life. Everything is fresh. Each animal has name only sounded out once. Eve is bathed of the poetry of her husband- dedicated to her. And God is with them. He does not seem to be the earth or the animals. He is here, but beyond. Like the sky. And we have looked up and out at the beyond for inspiration of God since. It is the expansive majesty of the Cosmos that leads David to praise God for His wonder. David says that the sky constantly speaks the Truth of God. Paul will see theology the Cosmos presenting God.

The Red Zone is the Internal world. It represents out life. How Adam must have gazed at his skin. He must have marveled at himself- not out of selfishness, but of admiration and awe of the One who made him. He knew he was the Imago Dei so how much more great the Dei? David would write that he was fearfully and wonderfully made and his soul knew that well. This earthly being made from the clay, this life filled with red blood, this man had his own life. He had thoughts and choices.

Adam could also connect to the world around him. There was a world in his senses that was beyond him. It was filled with light and shadow, sound and silence. In it was eve, his sons, the garden, the horizon. This was a verdant world of life. It was the Green Zone.

like this have shaped the nucleus of terra. Understanding that we live in these three areas and the Bible speaks to them all, feeds and challenges us. Christ seeks to live through and into them all. So we have roles @ the Terra that reflect that. We read the Bible through those lenses. We live our lives with a pilgrim awareness. We give out life to connect beyond.

I am sure we will talk more about these zones over the years.
