CHILDREN’S CLOTHING EXCHANGE | 4.30.11 http://terranovachurch.org/blog/2011/04/childrens-clothing-exchange-4-30-11/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=childrens-clothing-exchange-4-30-11 http://terranovachurch.org/blog/2011/04/childrens-clothing-exchange-4-30-11/#comments Sat, 09 Apr 2011 16:02:19 +0000 Matthew Miller community extension http://terranovachurch.org/?p=3003 Women from Terra’s “Tuesday Moms Group” are working on a clothing drive designed to help Terra parents get rid of clothing that their kids have outgrown and hopefully get some clothing they can use.  Ultimately we would like this event to also benefit our friends at Alight Care Center here in Troy.

There will be a need for some volunteers to help with this, so keep an eye on the “Parents Group” here on The City to sign up if you can help.

Here are the details from the event coordinator Jill Dubois.

Terra Nova Church will be hosting its first ever Children’s and Maternity Clothing Swap on Saturday, April 30th from 9:30 to 11:30 at 409 River Street!  Donate what your family no longer needs and come take what you can use.

We will be accepting donations before and after both services on Sunday April 17th (Palm Sunday) and Sunday April 24th (Easter Sunday) at 409 River Street.  Donations can also be dropped off during the week at 409 River Street.  (Please call ahead to be sure someone who can let you in is there).  Donated clothing should be contained in bags or plastic bins.  Please label bins with your name so that they can be returned to you at the clothing swap.  All children’s clothing  and shoes from newborn to 5T in good condition (without stains or rips) will be accepted.  Maternity clothing in good condition will also be accepted.

The clothing swap will be held in the large meeting room at 409 River Street.  All donated clothing will be sorted by gender and size.  Everyone is welcome to attend.  Even those who did not have clothes to donate should feel free to attend and take what they can use.  Those expecting a new baby are especially welcome to attend, as smaller sized clothing will probably be in abundance!

This clothing swap will be run as a benefit for Alight Care Center (http://www.alight.org/).  All clothing remaining after the swap will be donated to Alight.  In addition, we would like to collect items for which Alight has an especially high need.  These items are size 2, 3, and 4 diapers for their diaper program and folding Pack n’ Plays.  Diapers and Pack n’ Plays can be dropped off before swap or at the swap itself.  All diapers and Pack n’ Plays will be set aside for Alight and will not be a part of the swap.  In addition we will be accepting monetary donations for Alight at the clothing swap.

Katherine Edwards, who is a local painter and has been a part of several shows at the gallery, featuring landscapes of the upstate region, will be showing her new work.

As always this gallery opening is in conjunction with TROY NIGHT OUT.

TERRA’S HABITAT TEAM | needs volunteers http://terranovachurch.org/blog/2009/12/terras-habitat-team-needs-volunteers/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=terras-habitat-team-needs-volunteers http://terranovachurch.org/blog/2009/12/terras-habitat-team-needs-volunteers/#comments Thu, 31 Dec 2009 16:14:03 +0000 Matthew Miller community extension http://www.terranovachurch.org/blog/?p=928 From Ray Pierce (who leads Terra Nova’s Habitat for Humanity Team)

Does anyone remember what is like buying your first house? A little overwhelming considering all the parties involved: the bank, seller, real estate agents, housing inspector, lawyers, and well meaning family members give you lots of advice. Generally, you run into a few bumps along way, whether it is the condition of the house or a quirky seller. Buying our first house was challenging, we went through a lot of hoops, but in the end we were happy to finally have a place to call home.
For many people in the Capital District (and other places across the US for that matter) homeownership is not attainable because of their income. Many who work full-time just don’t make enough to afford a house at the market rate. According to the National Association of Realtors, the median sales price for a house in Rensselaer County is $168,000.
To help working individuals and families obtain homeownership, a nonprofit organization called Habitat for Humanity builds/renovates homes and sells it to prospective homeowner at cost. Sometimes a modest house will cost a family 60-80k, half the median sales price in Rensselaer. In order to qualify to purchase a home through Habitat, the family has to meet income guidelines, participate in homeownership training, and help build the house. Since 1976 Habitat for Humanity has built over 350,000 homes, providing shelter for almost 2 million people in 3000 different communities world wide!
This past spring Terra Nova began volunteering with Habitat for Humanity of Rensselaer as part of our Community Extension efforts. We’ve worked on three different homes, from tearing down an old garage to putting up siding and painting. Last week we worked on putting in windows at the most recent site on Ingalls Ave in Troy. The Ingalls house is a “church build” meaning that churches throughout Rensselaer County are pitching in through prayer, volunteering, and finances, to renovate this old house and provide a home to a family in the area.
On Christmas Eve, Terra Nova’s special offering raised $1000 to support Habitat for Humanity of Rensselaer County. Thank you for sharing the blessings that God has given you. Volunteers are needed if you’d like to help out. No special skills required, except a little elbow grease. You can sign up to help by emailing Matthew Miller.

MERRY CHRISTMAS | from the miller’s http://terranovachurch.org/blog/2009/12/merry-christmas-from-the-millers/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=merry-christmas-from-the-millers http://terranovachurch.org/blog/2009/12/merry-christmas-from-the-millers/#comments Thu, 24 Dec 2009 23:04:48 +0000 Matthew Miller community extension http://www.terranovachurch.org/blog/?p=918 Terra Nova Church family,

The Lord God has been working on me during the course of the last year when it comes to this idea of being incarnational.  As I sit and wait for Emmanuel today I can’t get that idea out of my head and heart.
I pray that in the next year God will give our church a new sense of urgency and a new spirit of boldness as we seek to share him.
I am also praying that God will work in us and show us how to practice the ministry of presence in a more intentional way.  Is it a contradiction?  Can we be both simply present and yet at the same time intentional? I think we can, and I’m going to work on that over the course of the next year.  I hope you will join me in that.
Regardless if it is through our boldness or through our simple presence, I’m praying that people will know Him and love Him, because He chooses to use us, to point people to Him.
Frieda and I love you all.  We can’t wait to raise our son (due in March) amongst you.  Serving you, and Him, in ministry at Terra is our great joy.
“Hasta la Victoria Siempre”!
and … Merry Christmas!
The Millers

Brian Hofmeister painting

Great opening on “Black Friday”. It’s an exhibit that everyone should see. The artists are Brian Hofmeister and mi Chelle Vara . Brian is a pastor at Christ Church in Guilderland. His beautiful paintings capture the essence of turn of the century (1900) architecture in Schenectady. Brian’s talent for blending colors on canvas makes him one of the regions emerging artists you have to see. And the abstract metal sculptures by miChelle interspersed among brian’s paintings make this a most interesting exhibit you don’t want to miss! It’s on display through January.
