" As I was reading this, I was getting so bored about "emergent church" this and "postmodernism" that. I started to complain to Dave about that, and then I got to your "passe" quote. Thank you! I was interested 5 years ago when I wrote my thesis on postmodernims, but now it's so old, I am not even remotely interested in those terms anymore. Thanks Phil and Ed for introducing a better term to me ("missional"). How does cultural relevance fit into the calling of the church?

There are three pieces to the gospel journey. We must embrace a truth from God that is beyond us, a purity within that produces a personal pilgramige and a connection beyond. In essence we embrace the mind [truth], the heart [purity] and the passion [mission] of Christ. Culture is the medium through which people connect and speak. Common language, artifacts and cues make communication real to cultural groups.

2. Where does theology fit in the life of the church?

Theology is core. The problem is we make more than core theology a part of the core. When Jesus asked his disciples to sign off on following him with their lives in Matthew 16 he gave a clear Christology. Jesus is the Christ. He is the Son of the Living God. He dies for Sin. He returns to save and judge. This built the early church. The book of Acts is a reflection of that core Christology. It is in the depth of these simple yet not simplistic theological realities that the church finds the great expressions of the gospel.

3. Where does tradition fit in the life of the church?

It is there. Things have been done. If tradition has meaning and context it is comforting. If tradition loses that it becomes drudgery.

4. Is the ermerging church the way or a way of doing church in the 21st century?
How would you respond to this article?
http://www.emergingchurch.info/stories/nudes/index.htm

I don’t surf. I am not a naturist. It seems goofy to me.

The emerging church is a name without definition. We don’t use or subscribe to emerging church at terra.

5. How would you define the emerging church?

It is a ruined term that has no meaning. For some it is program and style. For some it is the revival of neo-orthodoxy. For some it is hip fundamentalism. I think it is @ best truth meeting time in the now. I prefer the term missional church.

6. What have you found to be the difficulties for “emerging churches”?

I don’t know enough to answer that. I would say the lack of unified definition of the term has brought some confusion and distrust.

7. What weaknesses are there?

If it means generational churches, that is a weakness.

8. What strengths are there?

If it means connection as evangelist to current culture, that is a strength.

9. Why did you choose to be a Pastor in an emerging church?

I am a north american. I am a gen xer. I am a northeasterner. I am an artist and Christian. I am a pastor who speaks from and to that experience. God has called me to a place called Terra Nova. It is church the way I would do church. I have a liberty and security there. We are both ancient in our orthodoxy and instant in our cultural connections.

10. How does missions fit in to the emerging church, is it any different?

I think newer churches are connecting with segments that the institutional church does not connect with. There is a missional emphasis that is integrated to life.

11. What type of emphasis does the emerging church place on community?

I believe community is a defining role of the church . We try to be biblical in that. It happens to be something people in an isolated, meadia saturated, fast change country like America cry for.

12. Postmodern is a term which can mean many different things depending on who you ask. What is your definition and how does that relate to the emerging church?

Postmodernism is a critique of rationalism. It argues against mata-narrative- over arching meaning.

We speak to and live in a way that is experienced and not simply instructive. That naturally seems to connect with those labeled as pomo.

13. Do you plan to partner with other churches, in the world, in the U.S.A. and then in the greater Albany area including non-emergent churches? If so, why, and how?

Yep. It’s a big Kingdom.

14. Explain the emergent churches view on music in relation to worship. If the emergent church does not have an overall view or idea, what is your personal idea of worship and music?

I’ll leave that to Scott Womer.

15. What makes an emergent church different than other churches?

new names for old things? The missional Church is really to me two things. It is a monastery for the brothers and a missionary station for the kingdom. That should not be different from any church really. What will make us different is the way we do those things, who connects with them, and probably how we explain and label those things.
